			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Applications are now being sought for the 2009 Cutting Edge Research Grant Program. This year, financial support for the CERG Program has been increased to $100,000 to allow for a greater number of individual, well-conceived proposals to be funded. Grants ranging from $5,000 &#8211; $20,000 will be awarded in order to stimulate a broad scope of research relevant to dermatologic surgeons and the dermatology specialty at-large.<br />

• Awards ranging from $5,000 to $20,000<br />
• New “call for research” component on Board-directed socioeconomic topics<br />
• Awards will be announced at the 2009 ASDS Annual Meeting, October 1 – 4 in Phoenix, AZ</p>
<p>Besides increased funding, the program has been expanded to include a first-ever “call for research” based on specific, Board-directed socioeconomic topics to demonstrate our depth of training, scope of practice, safety record, efficacy and similar issues (please see the full list below). We specifically encourage ASDS members to submit proposals in these areas, as well as clinical research with specific relevance in:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The American Association for Dental Research is inviting applications from investigators for a sponsored award in clinical research in periodontology. The fellowship is in memory of William B. Clark, the late Professor of Oral Biology and Director of the Periodontal Research Center at the University of Florida.</p>
<p><strong>Eligibility:</strong></p>
<p>Applicants must have completed their first professional degree. The applicant should be appointed at an accredited dental school or academic research center in the United States. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents of the US, and members of the AADR.<br />

<strong>Applications:</strong></p>
<p>Applicants must submit the following:</p>
<ul>
<li>letter stating their interest in applying for the award</li>
<li>3-4-page (double-spaced) overview of their proposed areas of training, including how the experience will affect future research to be conducted by the applicant</li>
<li>brief description of the facility which will provide the training</li>
<li>letter of support from the proposed mentor must be included</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Research Topic:</strong></p>
<p>Submissions must include a plan to gain expertise in clinical research in an established laboratory. The training plan may be of 3 weeks’ to 3 months’ duration and should allow the successful applicant to learn state-of-the-art methodology related to clinical periodontal research. The applicant may also describe a research project using the methodology in the field of oral health. After the training is completed, the applicant will be expected to submit a brief report to the AADR, outlining the benefits derived from the training.</p>
<p><strong>Award:</strong></p>
<p>One award in the amount of $5,000 will be made. This award is intended to provide travel and other support related to training during the fellowship period.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The fellowship will be a shared position between the National Food Institute and Center for Biological Sequence Analysis – DTU.</p>
<p>The 3-year scholarship is expected to be effective from 1. September 2009 or as soon as possible there after.</p>
<p>The fellowship will be part of a larger, International, research group, which mainly work with antimicrobial resistance and is part of cooperation with other Danish research institutions located in the Copenhagen area, why part of the work will be performed at these institutions.<br />
<span id="more-206"></span><br />
The aim of this project is to study the influence of sub-lethal concentrations of different biocides commonly used during food processing on mutation frequencies, DNA-uptake and gene expression in bacteria with a focus on E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococci.</p>
<p><strong>In relation to this, the student will:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Examine the effect of different biocides on mutation frequency</li>
<li>Examine the effect of different biocides on gene transfer</li>
<li>Examine the effect of different biocides on gene expression</li>
<li>Study the ability of bacteria to adapt to higher concentrations of biocides</li>
<li>Study potential cross-resistance between biocides and antibiotics </li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Qualifications The ideal candidate:</strong></p>
<ol>
Will have a master’s degree in natural science, veterinary or human medicine, as an engineer or similar</p>
<li>Fulfils the requirements as set by the Danish Technical University:  http://www.dtu.dk/English/education/Phd_Education</li>
<li>Is interested in bacteria and preferably also antimicrobial resistance</li>
<li>Has experience working with class II bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella, staphylococci, etc.)</li>
<li>Has experience working with molecular microbiology tools such as PCR, cloning, micro-array and sequencing</li>
<li>Has experience with bioinformatic tools</li>
<li>Has a strong theoretical microbial background, and a strong drive for results and is ambitious</li>
<li>Is interested in working in an international research environment and like to communicate scientific results </li>

Winters Memorial Scholarship are requested from U.S. Marine Corps men and women who are currently on active duty, in the reserves or honorably discharged veterans. Eligible candidates must be currently attending fully accredited colleges or universities in the United States and enrolled as either part-time or full-time undergraduate students in an eligible Bachelor of Science degree program. Students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors who meet these requirements are eligible to apply.</p>
